Book Cover Series: 4

So here are the Final versions. All resolved and worked out. The colors changed some to become more uniform, the type treatments all were worked to be able to work as stand alone or as a series, there is similarity and yet some differences. The Titles were all placed in the same area and some had treatments and others were left in their original state. The back was treated the same for the two pieces of type, the bottom bit was a description of the author and the upper bit was an excerpt from the book. Those two paragraphs were worked in many places until I found the right place for them. The three words that serve as design elements as well as descriptive words about the book were meant to be more playful in placement. Yet at the same time they are there to serve as a play on the story/book content to take on the aesthetic of the book or even the character of the book or its described persons in it.
I also choose the make the books, I printed the covers and the Laboriously folded and cut, like a freak-in ream of paper. I perfect bound the papers and warped the covers around the bound dummy books to have a very Real Looking Book Series. It was a tremendous pleasure doing this project very fun and new to me. And yes book making has become sort of a hobby now I enjoy the process and crafty-ness of it all.

So these are the Images I worked with to begin the design process. I wanted imagry that related to the content in the books but also wanted to be able to do a similar or same treatment to all three. So after researching I found two interesting cover that had the image wrap the cover across the spine and that led me to doing a mirror image on the front and back of the book covers.

flip book video...
am trying to figure out how I can get a video of this thrown together that works well enough to not have to turn this in physically but would gladly just turn in the flip book too.
Also just noticed the Pics are all backwards!! sorry, the book goes from one piece of type to the end with 8 bits of type...

Dada poem:

So this busy and turbulent term had me going back and forth on what project to complete for the final project in ART 299/254. I originally wanted to do the Rad Maker Poster series on Why Not Associates, but in the end I saw other dada projects and found them to be quite interesting so thats what I decided to work on. The Artistic style im workin in is the Russian Constructivist.
My peom originated out of a Dwell article on a modern home in the portland area. I trimmed out the words and randomly pulled one at a time to creat my poem:
spacious sparkling geometry suggests
three-story shelter, small windows Skyline
wrap punctured rectangle opens house
turns two-lane Nordic cube.
Modernist three road up
So with the Oh So Original poem, i began to look at some constructovist designs, I drew from El Lizzitski (sp?) and some other pieces. and also the design that franz ferdinand used with ther shouting person, wih type coming out of the mouth. Obviously the colors were red black and shite and some greys. I played with how I would story board the design and type, by trying different things such as showing only each new piece of type alone in the design and ending up with the total piece. Also playing with design elements and having some come in and out/ being there in some and not in others to convey a sort of motion.
And my final printed version is going to be a flip book like ones where you draw a little deal in the corner of a notebook and flip to make it move. But thats how I'd like this design to be viewed, and that will work well with the whole idea of motion and type.

Phonotype Process 5
Phonotype Process 4

Heres a few of the specimen posters i worked on. The one with Phonotype on the bottom is the final poster sans a few small-ish adjustments. A more simplistic design aesthetic was what I was going for na in the end to tie in the pics from the spec-book i decided to use an image as the back ground which was a good decision in my opinion it tied things together made the poster more interesting visually.

This was the next move after deciding to stray from the copper wire idea, the copper was too rigid and not as fluid as I would have liked. The Apple headphones was another of my ideas so I went ahead and scanned the letters and was quite pleased. Some letters took more fanagle-ing than others but I ended up with a nice group of characters.

history of type...
The type history article was great, a nice short writing on typography. A new thing to me was in the classification, where they considered "sans serif" and "slab serif" as a classification, I had heard the term Contemporary as a classification before. So that was new to me. But over all was a nice refresh of type in history. ~me

testing this thing...
So this is my first post on here, this will be my blog to show classwork for 254 which I am retaking as a CBA in an effort to gain a different and new perspective, and to produce projects that reflect my coprehensionand skill of more than one sort of design style.
